Is Tywin Lannister the greatest villain ever? If you haven’t already seen, heard or read about it episode 9 of Game of Thrones third season is a gamechanger. Fans of the series are up in arms with hundreds of readers claiming they will now cancel their HBO subscription because of the ‘Rains of Castamere’. If you haven’t seen the episode yet we’d encourage you to do it now because the internet will spoil it for you at some point this week. However while most of the fan rage has been directed at Walder Frey and Roose Bolton it is Charles Dance’s controlling patriarch who should on the receiving end of the fan’s fury. The writers of the show and Dance’s acting have combined to allow George RR Martin’s slightly one note creation to become one of the greatest TV villains of recent years. From his introduction in the first series skinning a stag while calmly lecturing Jaime on the duties of a Lannister to his casual mastery of King’s Landing and the politics and personalities therein. The expansion of Tywin’s role in season 2 and domination of season 3 has been masterful. With a mixture of icy menace and fierce cunning his scenes with Arya, Tyrion , Sersei and especially Joffrey have been highlights of what has been an incredible television event. Now with the events of The Rains of Castamere, Tywin has set himself up as a protagonist who will stop at nothing to achieve his aims. We can only wait to see what the showrunners do with Tywin next!
