As a youtube channel whose content has a focus on cosplay, we are no stranger to a convention center. We visit Comic Cons and cosplay conventions up and down the UK, across Europe and the rest of the world – sometimes it feels like we visit every fan expo going!
But there really is something about this event, held yearly in Paris over the hottest weekend in July.
The festival atmosphere, the attendees, the amazing anime cosplay, the chance to watch new content premiere, the chance to meet voice actors, youtube stars and celebrities of the streaming world…
There really is something fun for everyone!
It’s no wonder Japan Expo is one of France’s, and one of all of Europe’s, most popular events for all things Japanese culture and anime cosplay.
Four days of anime cosplay heaven!
This is one of the hugest celebrations of anime in the world.
Whichever anime series is your favourite, you are bound to find fans who are also interested in the same fictional world as you.
The event caters for all types of Japanese animation – be it anime series, manga, or even light novels. Everywhere you turn there’s a sign for a new stall, offering anime or manga news, the premiere of exclusive new content from Japan, or selling all kinds of merchandise to delight every audience.
But it’s not just Japanese animation! Japan Expo is a celebration of everything from the world of Japanese culture, from the city of Tokyo to beyond – Japanese language, music, entertainment, even the idea of the maid cafe – the very best of Japan features in this event.
More than just an anime expo…
And the convention has evolved beyond just bringing the light of Tokyo over to France. The expo showcases more than just Japanese culture – it celebrates geek media from all over the world, such as comics, TV and video games.
So if anime isn’t your thing, don’t worry! There truly is something for all 250,000 of its attendees.
Video games, anime and manga news
Japan Expo is famous for the quality of its vendors.
The organisers fill the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre with enormous stalls, the likes of which we have never seen at a convention before.
The brand representation is huge! Capcom, Genshin Impact, Nintendo to name a few of the titans at the event – plus every anime and manga company you can think of!
The expo halls absolutely wowed attendees this year with exclusive anime and manga news, video game trials, announcements and panels.
If you want to be the first in the loop about your favourite entertainment companies, Japan Expo is the place to be!
The cosplay!
No celebration of Japanese culture is complete without cosplay! As you can probably guess, the convention center is crammed with cosplayers. Particularly anime cosplay!
We saw people cosplaying absolutely everything you can imagine, from Batman to Sailor Moon, Squirrel Girl to Eren Jaeger. It is so awesome seeing so much anime cosplay in one place!
Some people dress up specifically to meet their favourite voice actors from anime series – these signings are some of the most popular events at any anime convention, and Japan Expo is no exception! Meeting voice actors dressed up as their character is a thrill most cosplayers find amazing fun.
Others dress up purely for fun, to set themselves free of the monotony of everyday life and become their favourite character – for some attendees, for the very first time! It is always amazing seeing so many cosplayers over the weekend discovering what a joy it is to cosplay at an event like this.
EGC (The European Cosplay Gathering)
But the biggest cosplay draw of all was ECG, the European Cosplay Gathering. The finals of one of the biggest European cosplay competitions is held here in July.
Cosplay competitors combine their incredible outfits with self-made videos, incorporating tons of different skills in their cosplay presentation.
It is amazing seeing the cosplay representatives from so many different countries – not just the UK. And when the incredible cosplayers descend from the stage, it certainly isn’t hard for us to search for amazing costumes to film for our CMV!
Being able to watch the finals with thousands of other interested audience members was absolutely a highlight of Japan Expo, and always an unforgettable event in cosplay history!
The weather at Japan Expo
It takes a very dedicated expo goer to spend four days of an anime convention out in the July heat, dressed up from their favourite anime, manga or video game.
While it was certainly much hotter than an expo you might attend in December, the sun was part of what made Japan Expo so fantastic.
So many cosplay fans were having fun in the sun. The whole convention center was full of life, inside and out, and it made Japan Expo an absolute joy to visit.
We have never seen so many cosplayers, determined to wear their anime cosplay despite the weather! It was amazing to see.
Who goes to Japan Expo?
Attendees come from all walks of life, from all over the world, not just France! Several people make the trip from a far off location to come and see ECG, and just to hang out in one of the biggest entertainment news hubs in Europe.
And it’s not just fans of anime cosplay! We saw tons of people cosplaying from comic books, sci-fi, video games and more.
